On January 23, HENU held a medical education innovative development retreat. The retreat is in the form of a combination of online and offline, group discussion and collective discussion, with the theme of continuing to promote coordination between medical education and practice and accelerating the innovative development of medical education, to communicate together and discuss the new ideas and new plans to promote coordination between medical education and practice and accelerate the innovative development of medical education. Sun Junjian, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of HENU, Secretary of the Party Committee of Henan Medical School (HMS), and Deputy Leader of the Medical Education Reform Leading Group; Han Shoufu, Chief Accountant of HENU and Deputy Leader of the Medical Education Reform Leading Group; and Yan Jianqun, Honorary Dean of HMS and Former Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong University attended the retreat. The main persons in charge of all member units of the Medical Education Reform Leading Group, as well as relevant persons from HMS and its affiliated schools, hospitals, and scientific research institutions attended the retreat.

On the day, the participants closely focused on the theme and put forward targeted, constructive, and enlightening opinions and suggestions in accordance with Implementation Plan for Accelerating Innovative Development of Medical Education by Henan University (Draft for Comments) and The Fourteenth Five-Year Development Plan for Medical Discipline of Henan University (Draft for Comments) in combination with their respective actual work to further gather wisdom, unify ideas, and form consensus.

During the video connection, Yan Jianqun said that since the 13th Five-Year Plan period, in the discipline construction pattern of HENU, in which the liberal arts, science, medicine and engineering are the mainstay, and multiple disciplines are coordinated in development, the medical discipline has become one of the strategic focuses and important supports for enhancing the HENU’s core competitiveness and comprehensive strength. Facing the development tasks of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the medical student and staffs of HENU have shouldered the historical mission and worked hard to make the medical discipline an important engine and stronger support for the double-class construction of HENU. He expressed his opinion and hoped that, as a new medical educator who joined HENU, in 2021, with the administrative support and help of the Party Committee of HENU, he will work together with all medical students and staffs to continue to make efforts to ensure the smooth pass of the certification of the clinical medicine discipline; seize the important opportunity of the Double Ten Thousand Project, exploit strengths and avoid weaknesses, do well in the construction of first-class majors and first-class courses, and achieve a breakthrough in the doctoral program of clinical sciences; double the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects and national scientific research projects applied and approved compared with the last year; and make efforts to improve the size and structure of the team with team building as the core and lay a solid foundation for innovative development of medicine of HENU.

Sun Junjian pointed out that the main task of this retreat is to study and implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the second/third/fourth/fifth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China under the guide of the Xi Jinping Thought of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and put forward constructive opinions and suggestions in implementing the implementation plan of the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Innovative Development of Medical Education issued by the General Office of the State Council (Guobanfa [2020] No. 34) and preparing the development plan for medical education of HENU during the 14th Five-Year Plan period in accordance with the Opinions on Deepening Coordination Between Medical Education and Practice and Further Promoting Medical Education Reform and Development and the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Innovative Development of Medical Education and other documents issued by the General Office of the State Council.

Recognize the situation and meet the challenge.

Sun Junjian pointed out that the world is undergoing major changes which have not even met for a hundred years. No matter from an international or domestic perspective, China's higher education, especially medical education, is facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges. HENU has made remarkable achievements and accumulated useful experience in the two years of deepening the coordination between medical education and practice and promoting the reform and development of medical education. However, there are still bottleneck problems to be resolved. Guiding opinions on the innovative development of medical education issued by the General Office of the State Council, the administrative measures for clinical medical education bases of higher medical colleges jointly issued by the Department of Education and the Health and Construction Commission of Henan Province and other documents points out the direction and provides good opportunities for promoting the reform of medical education in HENU and the innovative development of medical education.

Invigorate the spirit and take advantage of the trend.

Sun Junjian emphasized that, in accordance with the State Council’s guiding opinions on innovative development, we should identify problems, come up with solutions, formulate implementation plans of HENU, and vigorously promote the innovative development of medical education in HENU with its whole strength. In accordance with the new requirements of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party on higher education in the National and Provincial Fourteenth Five-Year Development Plan, the new measures developed by the State Council and the Provincial Government for the reform and innovation of medical education and the new standards issued by the education authorities for the development of medical disciplines, and under the combination of the new problems existing in the reform of coordination between medical education and practice and innovative development in HENU, we should condense knowledge and strength and formulate the 14th Five-Year Plan for the development of medical disciplines in HENU.

Combine virtuality and reality, and make united efforts.

Sun Junjian requested that we must deeply understand the state's good intentions in issuing two consecutive documents on medical education reform during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, and earnestly study the spirit of the documents. It is necessary to combine the relevant documents and standards issued by the state, and formulate the 14th Five-Year Plan for the development of medical disciplines in HENU with the focus of the innovative development of medical education. It is necessary to make overall planning and implement well in combination with key tasks, and the requirements and standards issued by the state. The member units of the Medical Education Reform Leading Group must seriously think about how to support the innovative development of medical education in HENU at the university level, and hold the retreat with a serious attitude.

The future of medical disciplines of HENU is expected.

In his concluding speech, Sun Junjian pointed out that this retreat was very successful, through which everyone talked about thinking and ideas, deepened and detailed the practical measures of implementing the plan, and provided ideas and formulated the key points for the development of the 14th Five-Year Plan. The current problems and shortcomings were deeply analyzed in an objective, comprehensive and pertinent manner, and the ideas were practically implemented in accordance with the two documents, which reflects the truth-seeking and pragmatic work attitude and the inward self-revolutionary spirit of the medical staff of HENU, and lays a solid foundation for the next step to make more precise efforts to speed up the innovative development of medical education in HENU and break the bottleneck. We must be full of confidence and work hard to create a new chapter in the innovative development of medical education with unreliable and proactive enterprising sprit and vigor.
